Henkel has launched an innovative cold seal adhesive specifically designed for barrier-coated paper packaging, addressing a key technological gap in the market. This new solution supports the packaging industry’s ongoing shift from plastic to sustainable paper-based materials, offering both efficiency and eco-friendly advantages.

The product, known as Loctite Liofol CS 7106 RE, comes at a time when manufacturers are under growing pressure from the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, as well as changing consumer preferences. Over 70% of consumers worldwide now prioritize recyclable packaging.

Paper Packaging

According to Precedence Research, the Cold Seal Adhesive Market was valued at USD 1.25 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 1.32 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 2.18 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 5.70% from 2026 to 2035, driven by the rising demand for sustainable, high-speed, and convenient packaging solutions across several industries.

Preserving Paper Integrity: Cold Seal Solutions for Sensitive Packaging

  • The solution provides a secure seal without the need for heat application.
  • It is an essential requirement for snack, ice cream, and confectionery industries, where products are vulnerable to thermal exposure.
  • By removing heat from the sealing process, manufacturers can maintain product quality and aroma while minimizing mechanical stress on the paper material.

Recyclability and Circular Economy Compliance

The adhesive belongs to a product family specifically designed for compatibility with recycling processes. Its suitability for mechanical paper recycling has been confirmed by a recognized certification body, ensuring that the material can reintegrate into the circular economy. Cagri Turkmen, market strategy manager for flexible packaging at Henkel, stated, “Henkel provides verified cold seal performance on barrier-coated paper and packaging solutions that fulfill the criteria for a circular economy.”

High-Speed Performance and Versatile Packaging Applications

The coating is engineered for high-speed production lines and ensures stability across different paper weights. Additionally, it is formulated to withstand typical migrants present in paper substrates, thereby preventing performance variations throughout the manufacturing process. Although originally aimed at food segments, the solution is also relevant for secondary packaging and collection cards that formerly depended on plastic-intensive structures.

A recent report by Precedence Research highlights that the cold seal adhesive market is benefiting from the rising adoption of packaged food and pharmaceutical products.
