Malaysia has reached a major milestone on its path to electric vehicles (EVs) as the state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery separator factory by INV New Material Technology Sdn Bhd was launched in Penang Technology Park@Bertam, Kepala Batas. This is a milestone RM3.2 billion investment in the country. The facility is envisioned to have an output capacity of 1.3 billion square meters of wet-processed and coated lithium-ion separators, making the facility not only responsible for making Malaysia the Southeast Asia hub of battery materials but also for positioning the country well in the global EV value chain.

The opening which was conducted by Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow, is considered a step in the right direction in the national hope of developing the New Industrial Master Plan (NIMP) 2030 and the Chemical Industry Roadmap 2030 in Malaysia. It is a combination of involvement of high technology investment, nurturing talent, and sustainability, which are all part of the advanced industrial strategy of the country. With the world racing to create powerful EV ecosystems, Malaysia's shift to domestic production of the main and vital components of batteries could not have been better timed. In addition to the economic value of the project, it serves as an indicator of the movement towards energy independence and green innovation, enabling Malaysia to become not only an assembly hub but also a genuine innovator of EV technology

Liu Rui, CEO of INV New Material Technology (M) Sdn Bhd, echoed this sentiment. “We are honored to be part of Malaysia’s journey in building a robust, forward-looking electric vehicle ecosystem. This facility is not just an investment in infrastructure but a long-term commitment to sustainability, innovation, and talent development,” said Liu. “Malaysia offers the strategic advantages, talent pool, and government support we need to make this vision a reality, and we are proud to call it home to our first facility in the ASEAN region.” His statement highlights the mutual benefits of this partnership and the growing confidence global tech companies have in Malaysia as a viable destination for manufacturing and R&D.
