In September 2026, Rivian unveils RivianOS 2, which is a significant vehicle software update that integrates the operating system of the entire vehicle fleet for the first time, including the R1 and R2. This update brings a lot of changes, which include a renovated interface, Unreal Engine 5-powered graphics, real-time police alerts and speed cameras, and AI capabilities through the Rivian Unified Intelligence.

The first generation of R1, the first generation of R2, and the R2 were based on software that was independently designed. RivianOS 2 brings all 3 variants under a single software base. The capabilities that the system can use still depend on the underlying hardware. Rivian leverages Unreal Engine 5 to display real-time 3D visualization of the vehicle and the nearby regions.

The first generation of R1 uses Unreal Engine 4 even now, so that the screen displays still work on previous generations of computing hardware. The standout update in RivianOS 2 is the interface, where quick controls and media players can be placed on the left as well as the right sides of the screen. It is also equipped with a vertical status bar to simplify the accessibility of vehicle functions.

The settings menu has also been redesigned using a feature called “Settings 2”. The new menu provides controls that adjust according to the context and a universal search feature. The navigation sector now offers Real-Time Route Alerts, which show data about the presence of police and speed cameras on the map through Google Maps. The company reported that this information is sourced from regional authorities, third-party platforms, and community contributions. Rivian Unified Intelligence forms the technological foundation for the “Hey Rivian” assistant that offers direct control over various features in the vehicle.

Impact on the AI Industry

According to Precedence Research, the launch of the RivianOS 2 is expected to boost the AI industry as various automakers provide advanced features in their cars. This software upgrade introduces an AI assistant that can take audio instructions to perform certain tasks related to features in the car. The success of this feature will depend on how accurately it can take audio cues and perform the task. There are various sounds in the cabin, such as engine/motor sound, passenger conversations, and other systems. The AI assistant needs to selectively focus on the relevant audio instruction and perform the task.

Impact on the Digital Transformation Market

The global digital transformation market size accounted for USD 1.49 trillion in 2025 and is predicted to reach around USD 12.53 trillion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 23.73% from 2026 to 2035.

According to Precedence Research, the introduction of RivianOS 2 is expected to propel the digital transformation market. Many car manufacturing companies are moving towards the use of digital electronics for settings control instead of physical buttons and knobs in the cabin. This is leading to the increasing usage of digital technologies, although there is some skepticism about reliability and usability. Many companies have set a limit on which features are controlled via a screen and which are controlled using buttons. Certain features need to be adjusted immediately, and any electronic lag can have serious consequences.

Impact on the Cybersecurity Market

The global cybersecurity market size was valued at USD 301.91 billion in 2025, calculated at USD 339.96 billion in 2026, and is expected to reach around USD 969.45 billion by 2035. The market is expanding at a solid CAGR of 12.37% over the forecast period 2026 to 2035.

According to Precedence Research, the launch of RivianOS 2 is expected to boost the cybersecurity market, as there have been recent concerns about privacy violations by AI assistants used in vehicles and homes. Many people report that it records conversations, which it was not supposed to. This is a new area of cybersecurity where technical teams need to develop solutions that can control the access to data by AI. It will boost the research and development segment of the market.
