Samsung launched its R20 ultrasound system at RSNA 2025, positioning the company as a leader in AI-driven healthcare innovation. The unveiling is an intentional step to avoid associating Samsung with its previous experience as a technological follower and to step confidently into the domain of leadership. The surging number of obesity cases and chronic metabolic cases further facilitates the demand for precision imaging technology. This is the gap that Samsung is directly targeting, with a platform designed not only to take better pictures but also to be significantly smarter in diagnostics.

The R20 uses the company's new Advanced Imaging Engine, an integrated hardware-software design. This provides high-quality image clarity through improved beamforming and intelligent signal processing. Samsung has been more prolific in using AI, and the system has over a dozen machine-learning applications that would automate measurements. These would also assist technicians during challenging scans and help clinicians make more confident decisions. The given capabilities are especially important because the patient population is becoming more difficult to image, as classic ultrasound systems often cannot handle high-BMI patients or patients with unclear pathologies.
The R20 launch is also a tactical move as far as this is the first time Samsung has tried to penetrate the long-standing GE Healthcare and Philips duopoly in the ultrasound market. Samsung is also establishing itself as the first to provide a platform where AI is not an adjunct to the diagnostic value, but a primary source of it. This moment is intentional because regulatory authorities are now more open to AI-based medical equipment. Furthermore, large healthcare networks are actively seeking technologies that boost diagnostic throughput without compromising quality. Additionally, this new advanced system may be a key driver of AI adoption in radiology departments in the United States, Europe, and Asia.
Tracy Bury, Chief Commercial Officer, Samsung Healthcare USA, said
“The R20 embodies our mission to elevate diagnostic imaging through purposeful innovation. We designed this system to confront real clinical pressures, from increasingly complex patients to the operational strain on hospital staff, and to support clinicians with intelligence that meaningfully improves diagnostic confidence and workflow efficiency.”
