In June 2026, Anthropic plans to start its own AI-based drug discovery program, following the trend of increasing interest among prominent technology companies in healthcare. The company announced that it would emphasize the development of drugs for rare diseases, which do not get much research attention from pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies.

The company also plans to commence efforts to develop AI applications for drugmakers. Anthropic’s life sciences lead Eric Kauderer-Abrams said that trying a hand at drug discovery processes would give them firsthand experience about how traditional pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies have been carrying out drug discovery processes. This will provide them with valuable insights to design well-aligned AI applications.

According to the conventional drug discovery workflow, when pharmaceutical companies find a suitable drug candidate, they usually send it to clinical trials, but Anthropic currently does not have the required infrastructure for the same. Kauderer-Abrams did not confirm what steps they would undertake once they found a suitable drug candidate that could potentially advance to the next stages.

Impact on the Healthcare Industry

According to Precedence Research, the entry of Anthropic in the healthcare industry is expected to make the space more technologically advanced. It will also help the development of treatments for rare diseases, which usually do not get much attention due to their low commercial value. There is a possibility of the drug discovery segment getting more competitive if Anthropic expands its infrastructure of drug discovery programs and starts research on multiple diseases. They will also bring a unique perspective to the development of drugs as they are essentially an AI-first company, so their approach to various stages would likely be very technology-infused and automated.

Impact on the Smart Healthcare Market

The global smart Healthcare market size accounted for USD 360.02 billion in 2025 and is projected to reach USD 1,497.89 billion by 2035, growing at a CAGR of 16.76% between 2026 and 2035.

According to Precedence Research, the debut of Anthropic in the drug discovery segment is expected to positively impact the Smart Healthcare market. The company will bring its immense prowess, experience, and resources to develop advanced automation and computation technologies in this space. They will likely adopt advanced AI models to parse huge datasets of drug candidates in the initial stages, on various parameters.

The company might also use real-time monitoring and remote clinical trials accessibility to the participants if, in the future, it expands its infrastructure for a full-fledged all-stage drug discovery to commercialization program. This is expected to be a future technology benchmark for conventional drugmakers as they adopt the practices used by experienced automation companies.

Impact on the Generative AI in Healthcare Market

The global generative AI in healthcare market size is valued at USD 2.64 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 3.57 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 48.23 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 33.71% from 2026 to 2035.

According to Precedence Research, the entry of Anthropic in the drug discovery space is expected to positively impact the generative AI in healthcare market. This market emphasizes the usage of advanced generative algorithms for the processing of huge datasets of potential drug candidates, as well as the manufacture of synthetic datasets to facilitate those algorithms to learn from them.

Such synthetic datasets are designed to closely resemble real-world datasets, and they help the AI algorithms increase their accuracy as they are exposed to more and more data in the training phase. Anthropic has significant experience and skilled personnel to deploy suitable advanced, well-trained algorithms to select potential drug candidates for further stages of the drug discovery workflow.

Expert Opinion

The senior officials of the company emphasized that the AI drug discovery program will help them gain insight into ground-level processes in the space. This will help them to make AI applications for this sector that are better aligned with the needs of workers and machines at various stages of the workflow. They will get a closer look at the processes where AI can help improve the efficiency and speed of operations, or even generate synthetic data that resembles real-world data to better train AI models.
