CATL Unveils LFP EV Battery With Record Range and Breakthrough Safety Standards

The revolution of the electric vehicle (EV) has now made another stride, with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the largest manufacturer of EV batteries in the world, unveiling its revolutionary Shenxing Pro battery in Munich. Introduced at the Munich Motor Show, the Shenxing Pro is being announced as the first lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery in the world to exceed 470 miles (558 km) of WLTP-certified driving range. Additionally, the ultra-fast charge capability. Indeed, the new battery can charge almost 300 miles (478 km) of driving range within 10 minutes - a record time that makes it the fastest-charging LFP battery in Europe.

CATL is branding the Shenxing Pro as a high-performance product, as well as a safe, durable, and cost-effective to speed up the process of global adoption of EVs. As opposed to conventional nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) batteries, which are usually more expensive, the Shenxing Pro uses LFP as a source of chemistry; it is less expensive, more available, and generally safer. The Shenxing Pro will feature a range of more than 250 miles (410 km) in extreme temperatures down to -20 °C (-4°F) to eliminate one of the major obstacles currently impeding the advent of electric mobility in colder regions.

It is not only an extended range with high charging speeds, but the Shenxing Pro is also engineered to endure much longer than most in the industry. The battery is capable of a driving range of up to 1,000,000 km over 12 years with almost all its capacity remaining even after 200,000 km (125,000 miles) of road use (in 2015). The company is assuring peace of mind and a state-of-the-art technology with a 10-year warranty or 240,000 km warranty. To automakers, this long life is not only a benefit of having reduced warranty expenditures, but is also a strong marketing instrument in an already competitive EV market.

Furthermore, CATL is making a statement to consumers and to its rivals that LFP technology is not only the preserve of cheaper EVs with restricted range anymore. This would be revolutionary for the mid-range EV market in Europe, where cost and convenience in charging are commonly the key factors that encourage consumers to switch to electric vehicles. Furthermore, the Shenxing Pro further empowers CATL as an innovation engine within the general EV ecosystem.
