In August 2026, Hindalco Industries unveiled India’s first Superfine Precipitated Aluminum Trihydrate (PPT ATH) plant in Belagavi. It has an annual production capacity of 30,000 tons. This launch helps the company increase its presence in the premium specialty chemicals segment and reduce dependence on imports for the wire and cable industry. Investors are closely watching how this development affects the finances of the company, which is currently running losses.

The development is an important milestone for Hindalco Industries, which is looking to increase its presence in the specialty chemicals industry. This plant currently has the capability of producing up to 30,000 tons of chemicals. It has a modular configuration that will enable it to increase the production capacity to 60,000 tons based on future demand. This plant intends to prioritize the production of flame retardants that do not contain halogen. It has important applications in cables, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, and many composite materials, where it prevents the generation of smoke and flame spread without the use of any toxic gas.

The company wants to manufacture this product indigenously to gain a significant share of the Indian wire and cable market. India has traditionally been dependent on imports for specialty fire-safety chemicals. Hindalco is a major company in the generic aluminum segment, and this launch shows its efforts to widen its portfolio. They aim to make the company resilient to metal costs and increase its profit. A standout feature of the plant is that it has placed a significant emphasis on the use of renewable sources of energy such as biomass, wind, and solar power.

Impact on the Chemicals Industry

According to Precedence Research, the launch of the Superfine PPT ATH plant in India is expected to positively impact the chemicals industry. There have been confirmed reports about climate change in many parts of the world. Average temperatures across a season are rising, and every year the average is higher than the previous year. This has increased the prevalence and risk of fires due to overheating in machinery. Conventional flame retardants contain toxic substances that can be harmful to the people working at the site. This plant will produce flame retardants that do not produce any toxic gases.

Impact on the Flame Retardant Market

The global flame retardant market size is calculated at USD 10.51 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 11.26 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 19.38 billion by 2034, expanding at a CAGR of 7.05% from 2025 to 2035.

According to Precedence Research, the launch of the Superfine PPT ATH site in India is expected to benefit the flame retardant market. This plant aims to produce non-toxic flame retardants and also aims to make India independent in the specialty chemicals market for wire and cable. Indigenous production will also bring down prices as compared to imported chemicals, as the final cost would not involve various import duties. Logistics costs will also decrease, thus making specialty chemicals much more affordable for various sectors in the country. This is especially important in price-sensitive markets in developing countries.

Impact on the Specialty Chemicals Market

The global specialty chemicals market size is valued at USD 940.72 billion in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 978.79 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 1,377.32 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 3.54% from 2026 to 2035.

According to Precedence Research, the launch of the Superfine PPT ATH plant in India is expected to positively impact the specialty chemicals market. Hindalco Industries is a major player in the generic aluminum products and aims to increase its profit margins by entering the specialty chemicals sector.

Such developments benefit the regional industry ecosystem when a prominent company debuts a new segment. Specialty chemicals are being used more and more in various industries as technologies and regulations are evolving rapidly. Many sectors are adopting sustainable operations, ethically sourced raw materials, and manufacturing technologies that minimize their carbon footprint.
