MG4 to Debut August 5 as First Mass-Produced EV with Semi-Solid State Battery

In another bold step towards the democratization of high technology with EVs, MG has revealed plans to transform the MG4 electric hatch. It's next vehicle launch, into the first mass-market, affordable EV to use a semi-solid-state battery. With sales set to start on August 5, as announced at a media event on July 17, the model will be led by Chen Cui, the General Manager of the MG brand division. That type of battery technology was previously exclusive to top-tier electric cars, such as the Nio ET5, or concept-only vehicles.

Furthermore, with the MG4, this boundary has finally been crossed, marking a significant step toward advancing battery technology and increasing access to electric vehicles.

The semi-solid-state Prismatic developed by QingTao Energy, used in the MG4, contains 5% liquid electrolyte. This development enhances safety, reduces energy consumption, and improves cold-weather performance. MG says a highly rigorous safety test with a challenging 360-degree puncture test was passed and reports a CLTC-rated range of 537 kilometers and an energy density of 180 Wh/kg. Such numbers imply that MG4 has the potential to be the gear-changer in different climates, with range anxiety exacerbated by freezing temperatures.

The production of the MG4 is already underway at SAIC's manufacturing plant in Nanjing, China. The exterior design of the vehicle is inspired by the electric sports car of MG, the Cyberster, having a chiseled front face, divided headlight units, and an illuminated MG logo. Such visceral components make the MG4 a fashionable alternative within the niche of affordable electric cars, broadening its appeal to a wider audience, including those car enthusiasts driven by design.

With its innovative battery technology, improved driving performance, competitive pricing, and numerous smart features, the MG4 is a solid competitor in both the Chinese and global electric vehicle markets. As governments and consumers become more focused on affordability and energy efficiency, this facilitates the expansion of the MG market. Furthermore, the model is not only another electric vehicle, but a far-sighted idea of affordable, technologically advanced, and eco-friendly transportation.
