Tesla has gone the extra mile in electric mobility with a new long-range Model Y in China, offering an impressive 821 km range under the CLTC standard. The introduction of the new Model Y Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) model marks a significant breakthrough in Tesla's battery technology and underscores the brand's leadership in the world's most competitive EV market. The most recent addition, announced on Tesla's official Weibo account, will enhance the Model Y line's functionality. This provides an additional 228 km of range to the otherwise 38% current model RWD, without affecting the performance.

This new model is propelled by a new-generation 78.4 kWh Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) battery from LG Energy Solution, one of Tesla's closest partners in Asia. The bigger pack will be a direct response to the increasing demand in China for long-range electric cars, specifically serving consumers who care about efficiency and performance.

Tesla engineers optimized the vehicle's aerodynamics and drivetrain to improve energy efficiency while still delivering seamless acceleration, resulting in a 0-100 km/h time of 5.6 seconds. In China, the company has priced the model below AUD 62,500, making it a compelling choice in the high-end EV category, where cost and range are the key competitive factors.

The new variant of the Model Y will be manufactured at Tesla's Gigafactory Shanghai, the company's most productive plant in the world. Gigafactory Shanghai serves the local market and exports cars to other parts of the world, including Australia, Europe, and some parts of Asia. The RWD variant has a 520 km range and a starting price of AUD 58,900, while the AWD Long Range, priced from AUD 68,900, has a 600 km range.

The highest-level Performance model, which just debuted at AUD 89,900, comes with adaptive suspension, carbon fiber interior trim, performance tuning, and 21-inch Arachnid wheels for enthusiasts who want sportier dynamics. Furthermore, as Tesla continues to develop its manufacturing ecosystem, the combination of low prices, extended range, and user-friendly software should shape consumer expectations in the EV market.
