UAV Navigation Grupo Oesia, a company based in Spain has recently been added as a member of Project TICHE, or Threats Identification by Collaborative Heterogenous Entities. This project is backed by the European Defense Fund(EDF) for the development of autonomous swarm robotics for detecting hidden threats such as IEDs and landmines.

 Swarm Robotics

Consortium-Based Collaboration

Project TICHE is funded by the European Commission through the European Defense Fund(EDF) and involves a heterogenous consortium of industrial, academic and technological partners from across Europe. Each of the partner contributes its unique expertise in the field of unmanned aerial vehicles(UAVs), ground robotics, and sensor technology. Some of the key consortium members are:

  • RINA-CSM(Italy): RINA-CSM is responsible for overall project coordination and brings its expertise in systems integration, advanced materials, and strategic project management to ensure that all partner-developed technologies integrate seamlessly into the TICHE swarm robotics platform.
  • UAV Navigation-Grupo Oesia(Spain): Grupo Oesia is responsible for developing swarm coordination and cross-domain control algorithms. These algorithms enable autonomous operation of various unmanned aerial and ground robots, thereby ensuring that all robots within the swarm operate as one single cohesive unit.
  • DLR-German Aerospace Center(Germany): DLR brings in expertise in autonomy, navigation, and aerospace engineering that enable robots within the swarm to dynamically adapt to complex environment.

The global swarm intelligence market size was calculated at USD 52.18 million in 2025 and is predicted to increase from USD 72.54 million in 2026 to approximately USD 1406.94 million by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 39.02% from 2026 to 2035 as the demand grows for autonomous robots, intelligent transport systems and AI-based optimization solutions.

Driving Market Relevant Innovation

Project TICHE is the epitome of commercially relevant swarm intelligence in the sense that it is not just a research-based initiative but also one that is relevant to the market. This project showcases practical viability in terms of its operational potential in defense, civil protection and industrial safety domains. By using multiple autonomous systems and the specializations of the partners involved, TICHE also highlights the trend towards the practical viability of swarm intelligence from laboratory to the market. Strategic partnerships, infrastructure and multi-domain organizations coordination are important factors that contribute to successful innovation in Project TICHE.

A recent report by Precedence Research highlights that the swarm intelligence market is benefiting from the development of AI technologies, the rise of IoT technology, and the need for efficient decision-making systems.
