LG Energy Solution took a radical step to transform how electric vehicle (EV) batteries are measured by launching its new service, B.once, a battery-diagnostic platform. This identifies vital battery health parameters, such as remaining capacity, voltage, and temperature, at 5-minute intervals. It leverages the company's industry-leading battery management system (BMS) design capabilities, underpinned by over 10,000 patents worldwide, to introduce a new level of speed, precision, and scale to the used EV market. Having delivered over 8 billion battery cells to over 15 million EVs to date, LG is laying the groundwork for battery lifecycle services that go beyond manufacturing.

The B.once service consists of two modules, which include the Quick Scan and Power Scan. Quick Scan allows a battery check in a few minutes by simply connecting a diagnostic device to the vehicle's onboard system and turning on the engine. The results are rendered in about 5 minutes, which is ideal for high-throughput scenarios such as used-car markets and service centers. Power Scan, on the other hand, provides a more detailed diagnosis by using actual charging data and delivers a detailed battery assessment report in approximately 30 minutes, much quicker than competitors. The product is designed to cater to warranty programs for used EVs and battery-based insurance products.

Besides, the launch of B.once indicates that LG is strengthening its strategic focus on global expansion and service diversification. The company not only launches the service in the domestic market but also in the international market, which aligns with its dream of dominating software and service business models alongside hardware. To the wider EV market, B.once helps overcome an endemic obstacle in the used-car market: battery health and battery degradation-related residual-value risk. Furthermore, this step by LG not only makes the company more competitive but also matures the EV ecosystem as a whole.
