Modular Medical has announced the launch of Pivot, its next-generation insulin patch pump designed to make diabetes management simpler, more accessible, and more affordable. The Pivot pump, unveiled at the Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists (ADCES) Conference in Phoenix, Arizona, focuses on the “almost-pumpers,” the adults who have not yet used insulin pumps but might gain by doing so. The Pivot model was born by capitalizing on the previous success and incorporating a more streamlined, user-friendly design that eliminates excess complexity, making the device's use a reality.
The FDA cleared Modd1's breakthrough microfluidics technology nearly a year ago, which allows delivery of high-quality and low-cost insulin. It has a reservoir capacity of 300 units (3mL) and enables the user to keep track of the pump via their smartphones without using any external controller. It is also convenient that a single-use, disposable battery powers it. Currently, the company intends to place Pivot under FDA clearance in October, with hopes of using it in the market in 2026.
Pivot pump is based on the advantages of MODD1, due to which it has a proven performance, but it has also made some design improvements that make it easy to use by patients and caregivers. The target market of Modular Medical is the segment of the so-called almost-pumpers, which is a sizeable, underestimated, and unsaturated target market in the field of diabetes management. These barriers are directly tackled by the intuitive design, the integration with smartphones, and the simplified setup process with Pivot.
The development of Pivot emerges around a time when diabetes management is turning patient-focused and, at the same time, is adapted to the lifestyle. The ability to connect the device to a smartphone, easy maintenance, and the ability to empower the user align with the more general healthcare trends of digital integration and user-centered self-management. Furthermore, by decreasing the cost of adopting pumps, Modular Medical can take up a large market share that needs a better solution than the current ones are providing.
