At AI Interpack 2026 in Germany, Sonoco unveiled its groundbreaking CapOnCan resealable metal packaging solution, which offers a mono-material, lightweight, and recyclable substitute for traditional glass packaging. The new packaging format is intended to comply with changing packaging rules while enhancing product protection, lowering transportation weights, and supporting circular economy objectives. By utilizing a 100% recyclable metal construction, the solution also assists brands in reducing packaging expenses and extended producer responsibility fees. Its lightweight design also lowers transportation-related carbon emissions and enhances handling across the supply chain. Sonoco's dedication to providing creative packaging solutions that strike a balance between sustainability, practicality, and customer convenience is reflected in the launch.

Driving Innovation in Sustainable Cold Chain Packaging

CapOnCan allows production to be readily resealed after opening while preserving product quality and convenience by combining a metal container with a hermetically sealed metal cap. Compared to conventional glass containers, the lightweight design reduces breakage hazards and increases transportation efficiency. Sonoca also demonstrated recyclable packaging solutions that promote sustainable packaging throughout food and temperature-sensitive product supply chains, such as microwaveable metal bowls. These developments are intended to increase product shelf life and improve manufacturers' and logistics companies' operational effectiveness. Additionally, they show how the industry is becoming more focused on using circular packaging solutions that increase recyclability without sacrificing product performance or safety.

According to the Precedence Research, the temperature-controlled packaging solutions market size was valued at USD 18.28 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 20.06 billion in 2026 to approximately USD 42.65 billion by 2035, expanding at a CAGR of 8.75% during the forecast period from 2026 to 2035 driven by rising demand for cold chain logistics, pharmaceutical transportation, and temperature-sensitive food packaging.

Industry Impact and Market Outlook

The introduction of CapOnCan demonstrates the increasing trend toward high-performance environmentally friendly packaging options for goods that are sensitive to temperature. To increase supply chain efficiency and lessen their impact on the environment, manufacturers are investing more in recyclable materials, lightweight packaging formats, and cutting-edge insulation technologies. These developments are assisting businesses in meeting corporate sustainability objectives and adhering to strict international packaging requirements. The use of cutting-edge packaging technologies is being further stimulated by the growing need for temperature-sensitive food transportation and pharmaceutical cold chain logistics. In the upcoming year, the market for temperature-controlled packaging solutions is anticipated to see new development prospects due to ongoing expenditures in smart packaging solutions and sustainable material innovation.
